Dawn of Time

The Early Years of Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve left the cave, headed for the garden. As they approached its western gate, they saw a huge serpent coming their direction—the same one which Satan had entered to deceive them. Moving toward the same gate, it slithered along, despondently licking the dust.

Once, the serpent had been the most respected animal of all, but now it was different. It had been one of the most beautiful animals in the world, so lovely the other animals were awestruck, but now it was the ugliest.

Dawn of Time

Fire and Blade

Trial by Fury

It had become slippery, and was forced to crawl around on its belly. Instead of eating the best food and living in the nicest places, like it did before, now it ate and lived in dirt.

Its home—once a place where every animal would gather—had now been abandoned. They all used to come and drink wherever the serpent drank. But ever since God’s curse made it venomous, they had all fled. None of them would ever drink from the same water again. Hated by everyone, it eventually became the meanest creature alive.

So, when that cursed serpent noticed Adam and Eve, it stood on its tail and swelled up its tremendous head. With blood-red eyes and gaping fangs, it moved toward them, preparing to strike. It went straight for Eve as she ran away, screaming. Adam just stood there, panic-stricken. There were no clubs or sticks anywhere to hit it with. He had absolutely no idea how to kill it. But with a heart burning for Eve, he ran after the creature and grabbed it by the tail.

It turned toward him, with hissing fangs. “It’s all your fault, Adam! Now I have to crawl around everywhere on my stomach!” The serpent lunged at Adam and threw him to the ground. Wrapping its gigantic coils around his body, it poised to crush him.

But God sent an angel, who threw the snarling creature away, and helped Adam to his feet.

The Word of God arrived. “Don’t ever forget,” He said to the serpent, “I’m the One Who made you so clever in the first place. I may have forced you to crawl on your belly, but still I didn’t deprive you of everything. But from now on, you, and all your kind, will never be able to speak another word again. Because it was you that first helped bring disaster to My creatures. And now here you are—trying to kill them.”

The speechless serpent was suddenly picked up by a tremendous wind from Heaven, and by God’s order, carried far away. Eventually, it landed somewhere on a seashore in India.1

“See, Lord,” exclaimed Adam, “I told You this would happen! I told You the animals would attack us and try to eat us! Didn’t I, Eve?”

Eve nodded, still trembling from their experience with the serpent. Suddenly, Adam began pounding his chest, and before long, he fell dead.

The Word of God then revived him. “Adam, none of the other animals will be able to harm you. I promise. Remember when I had them all visit you in the cave? I didn’t invite the serpent. Did I? Or else it would have attacked you then. I knew how vindictive it had become. That’s why I never even let it get near you. So relax. Don’t worry so much. I’ll still be with you until the end of the days I’ve determined for you.”

“But, God, please, can’t You just take us somewhere else? Someplace the serpent can never reach us? Or else someday, it might find Your servant Eve, and attack her again. Its eyes were so horrible, and so full of evil.”
